Is Google TV What I’ve Been Waiting For? [day 20]
May 22, 2010 — 28-Day Challenge, Internet, Television
I bought my primary TV from Costco in 2000. It's a 32" Philip Magnavox, and for the most part, it has served me well. I have it hooked up to my JVC A/V receiver and DVD player, and with my digital cable subscription, I can't complain.
But as any media/technophile will tell you, this setup is so yesterday. Where's the LCD, plasma and HD? I am clearly not "keeping up with the Joneses" or my family and friends, as they continue to upgrade to the latest media technology.
I have thought a bit – but really not a lot – about when I'd take the plunge and upgrade. And it may be sooner than I thought.
What if my TV had more computer bells & whistles?
In a nutshell, I'd like a TV that I could navigate and find stuff as easily as I can with my computer (Mac). [I'm much quicker with a keyboard than I am clicking with a remote.] I'd like to watch all the free shows, movies and videos from the web on my TV without having to hook up anything – wired or wireless. I could go on, but you get the idea.
Well, this week, Google announced a new product they're planning to release this fall: Google TV. I watched the video (below) and it certainly has caught my interest:
Some great articles
If you're interested in reading more about Google TV, here's what Google has to say: Announcing Google TV: TV meets web. Web meets TV. Just read past the marketing hype.
Fast Company took an interesting twist in this article – Google TV Preview: The Mom Test and The Nerd Test – where the author calls his mom to see if this new gadget could pass "the mom test." Pretty entertaining read, but he has a point.
Google, you've got my attention
I like the direction Google is going, but I'm going to just wait and see where it all lands. I won't be one of the early adopters, standing out in the cold rain overnight to get my hands on one of the first TVs this fall. If Google TV lives up to the promise, I may actually consider catching up with the Joneses, and my family and friends.
In 2011. Or maybe 2012. But I'm there!
Day 20 of my 28-Day Blogging Challenge completed. Over and out.
